Lubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) daily builds
It's very good to see the PowerPC builds getting as much attention as the rest on any OS. The fact that this is a great OS to boot makes it all the better.
These are obviously not final builds so don't expect perfection. The GUI is a bit more sleek and cleaned up compared to 12.04 which is the current stable long term support version.
Please note any issues or successes in comments so it can help others make sense of issues and more importantly send bug reports through the OS when prompted. It really helps the developers get things right for as many systems as possible.

Hi there,
ReplyDeletemanaged to get a download of the Lubuntu 12.04 today. I've burned the .iso file to a disc, how do i instal it? it is the desktop version and i'm trying to run it on a laptop, do you think this could be the problem? i rebooted the computer thinking it would boot from the disc but it spat it out again,
ta
The "desktop" in the title simply means it's a live desktop CD image. That means you can boot from the disk and try it out before you install. It in no way means it's for desktop systems only.
DeleteAre you sure you burned the disk properly? You cannot just burn the image as is to a disk. It needs to be burned in a matter which makes it bootable.
Here are the steps to take:
1. Mount the .iso in the finder which normally gives an error but only because Mac OS doesn't deal with Linux code well. Ignore the warning and click open.
2. Open Disk Utility on Mac OS and select the image in the side bar. You will want to select the top disk image icon with while around silver and not the drop down all white direct image.
3. Click burn.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more assistance and I will be happy to help.
G5 MAC ppc Lubuntu 12.10 takeing forever at "returning from Prom_init" Is it frozen or what?
ReplyDeleteSo I am trying to install a G5 Power Pc with lubuntu-12.10-desktop-powerpc. It stops on "Returning from prom_init". I'd love to know what's happening, If this is just normal, and lack of graphical support for the power pc results in it seeming frozen while stuff is actually happening.
On a G5 you should really stick with 12.04. It will make a big difference.
DeleteAlthough PowerPC can be made to run perfect on any Mac it's the over engineered models like all G5's, iMac G4/G5 that tend to have the most issues out of the box.
If I were you I would try Lubuntu 12.04, MintPPC and Debian 6.06 on your hardware and stick with the one that runs best. That may sound like a lot of hassle but it's all free and it will be a great learning experience.
Let me know if you need anymore guidance.
